How Long do Tumble Dryers Last?

Just like any other appliance in your home, your tumble dryer won’t last forever. But if you want to get an idea of approximately how often you would need to replace it, you’ve come to the right place.

In this quick guide we answer the frequently asked question – how long do tumble dryers last.

What is the Average Lifespan of a Tumble Dryer?

How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Tumble Dryer?

  • Use to the Specifications

To ensure your tumble dryer lasts it’s important that you don’t overload it as doing so will cause it to not spin as efficiently.

You should also clean the lint filter after each cycle. This might seem excessive, but you would be surprised how much lint can accumulate even after a single use! If you allow the filter to clog, your appliance will be under more stress which will decrease its efficiency. This can also turn into a fire hazard overtime.

Lastly, you need to make sure your dryer is getting proper ventilation. For this you have to allow space around the back of the appliance and at least one of its sides.

  • Regular Maintenance

Along with emptying the lint filter, you need to deep clean it every few weeks. Wash your filter with lukewarm water and then use a vacuum cleaner to clean the housing (make sure the vacuum is on a low suction setting). Before you put your filter back, make sure it’s dry.

Depending on whether you have a condenser or a heat pump dryer, you will also need to clean the condenser or filter drawer. These are usually located at the bottom of your dryer, under a panel which you will need to remove. Check the user manual for instructions before you attempt to clean this element as each model is slightly different.

What are the Signs Your Tumble Dryer Needs Replacement?

Before you inevitably need to replace your dryer, there will be signs it’s coming to the end of its lifespan. Here is what to look out for:

Performance

Perhaps the best indicator that you’re due for a new tumble dryer is its performance. If you’re finding that your clothes are taking much longer to dry or simply don’t come out dry enough, then it might be time to invest in a new one. A few issues to be mindful of when checking the performance of your dryer include:

  • Not being able to start properly
  • Inconsistent rotation
  • Shutting down during a cycle
  • Overheating or failure to get up to temperature

Unusual Odours and Sounds

Strange smells or sounds coming from your appliance is another indicator that there might be an issue. If your dryer is unusually loud it might indicate that certain parts are worn out, loose or broken.

Remember that your tumble dryer should smell of warm, fresh laundry. If you notice a burning smell coming from it, turn off the appliance immediately.

Issues with Wiring

Another telling sign your tumble dryer might be getting old is faulty or broken wiring. Unplug the appliance and remove the back panel to examine the wiring. If you see any exposed wires or wires with cracked or peeling plastic coating, it might be time to invest in a new dryer.
