How to Replace Bathroom Taps – Step by Step Guide
One thing many underestimate is how easily a new sink tap can transform your bathroom.
Classic chrome bathroom taps reflect the light around the room drawing attention. Old taps that have lost their shine on the other hand can diminish the looks of your whole bathroom.
Changing bathroom sink taps is an easy task even for the most novice of DIY enthusiasts. The experts at Modern Living will give you the full step by step guide.
What Will You Need to Fit Bathroom Taps?
Apart from your new taps and fittings, you will only need a couple of tools for this project. Those are a basin wrench, a screwdriver and some pliers.
How to Change Bathroom Sink Taps?
So without further ado let’s get into the details or how to replace your bathroom sink taps in only 5 steps.
Step 1 – Turn off Your Water Supply
First things first, before you replace your sink tap, you need to turn off the supply for both the hot and cold taps from the mains. Afterwards run both taps for a whole to drain any excess water and check it’s definitely off.
Important: Make sure all the taps are “open”.
Step 2 – Remove the Old Tap
Now that there is no risk of flooding your bathroom, it’s time to remove the old tap.
Reach under your bathroom basin and disconnect the tap from the water supply by unscrewing the flexible connectors from the mains pipework.
Next, unscrew the nut locking your old tap to the basin. This can be quite fiddly to get to, so have patience. Once unscrewed, you should be able to simply lift up the old tap and remove it.
Give your basin a quick wipe to get rid of any residue or soap build up that might have accumulated underneath the tap.
Step 3 – Fit Your New Tap to the Basin
Before you install your new tap to the basin, make sure to connect the threaded post supplied with it. Once this is done, feed the post into the basin hole so the tap sits on top with the thread poking underneath. Depending on the model of tap you might need a washer to help it sit snug with the basin surface.
Screw the nut onto the threaded post so your tap is tightly gripped onto your sink.
Step 4 – Connect Your Tap to the Water Supply
The last part of the installation process is connecting your tap to the water supply. To do this screw the flexible connectors to your tap then connect them to your domestic pipes. You will need to use a compression fitting between them to keep the pressure regulated.
Now the hot and cold water should feed from your wall to your new tap pipes. Before you go and turn on the water supply check there are no loose connections.
Step 5 – Switch Your Water Supply Back on
And with your new tap fitted to your bathroom basin, you can now turn the water mains back on. Remember we mentioned it’s important to set all water taps to “open”?
When you turn on the water all the air backed up in the pipes will be pushed out, if your taps are “closed” when the air rushes through it can cause potential damage. Wait until water starts running and close all the sink taps in your home.
