How to Install a Bathroom Cabinet – Step by Step
So how to install a wall hung bathroom cabinet? Here is Modern Living’s handy step by step guide:
Step 1 – Initial Checks and Preparations
First things first, before you start drilling you have to make sure the wall you will be installing your cabinet on is strong enough to support its weight. Using the pipe and cable detector check the area to make sure there are no water pipes or electrical wires behind it. The last thing you want is to accidentally drill into a pipe and turn a quick job into a whole bathroom renovation!
Next you want to check the instructions that came with your cabinet to ensure you’re using the right size fixings for the job. To make installation slightly easier you can take the cabinet doors off.
Step 2 – Decide on the Positioning
Once you have inspected the general area and know you’ll be able to install the cabinet there, it’s time to decide on its exact positioning. If you want to mount your cabinet over a sink, you want it to be centred to the basin.
Measure your basin to find its centre and then use a spirit level to extend the line upwards. Find the middle of your cabinet, align it with the middle of the basin and adjust it to your desired height on the wall. Once the cabinet is in the position it will be mounted, make sure it’s level and draw a line along the top edge marking the centre.
If you will be mounting your bathroom cabinet elsewhere in the room, simply hold the cabinet in the desired position and mark the top edge and centre. With the position of your cabinet marked on the wall, you can continue with measuring and marking out the position of the wall brackets.
To do this measure the distance from the top of the cabinet to the wall fixings. Mark this distance on the wall to figure out where the wall bracket needs to go. Hold your wall bracket flush with the wall and mark where the holes will need to go.
Step 4 – Drill Holes and Install Fixings
If you’re drilling into plasterboard, you can drill directly into the wall using the markings you made as a guide. If you have to drill into tiles, place a piece of masking tape over the marked out holes to stop the drill from skidding and avoid damaging the tiles.
Drill the holes to the correct depth and push the wall plugs in, ensuring they’re flush with the wall. If you’re installing your cabined on a tiled wall, the plugs should sit below the surface of the tiles. This way you can ensure the tiles won’t crack when the plugs expand.
Next align the brackets that came with your cabinet with the holes you made and carefully screw them in place.
Step 5 – Install Your Cabinet Unit
The final step in installing your unit is carefully lining up the fixings on the back of the cabinet with the brackets and slotting it in place. Now that your cabinet is up make sure that everything is level. There are usually small screws on the cabinet fixing you can adjust, if it’s a bit off.
Tighten the fixings from the inside of the cabinet to make sure it sits flush with the wall. Clean any visible pencil marks and enjoy your new wall hung bathroom cabinet!
